This International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, TriLinc Global celebrates the remarkable life and legacy of Wangari Maathai, a visionary leader whose courage and determination transformed lives and landscapes. Known affectionately as “Mama Trees” by many in Kenya, Maathai was a force of nature in every sense. She made history as the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women.
In 1977, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, empowering over 900,000 women through economic initiatives that combined environmental conservation with community development. By planting trees, these women not only restored degraded lands but also gained financial independence and a stronger voice in their communities. Maathai’s famous words, “You cannot protect the environment unless you empower people,” continue to resonate as a call to action for collective progress.
In 2004, Maathai’s extraordinary contributions were recognized globally when she became the first African woman and the first environmentalist to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Her work demonstrated the profound connection between environmental sustainability, social justice, and peace.
TriLinc honors Wangari Maathai, a true trailblazer who showed the world the power of perseverance, the importance of standing up for what is right, and the impact of doing many “little things” with great love and determination. Her legacy continues to inspire us to champion equality, sustainability, and empowerment for all.

TriLinc has provided financing for Blue Arrow, a waste-to-fuels processor that converts municipal solid waste ( “MSW”) to low carbon jet fuel. TriLinc’s financing will support the continual development of Blue Arrow’s waste-to-energy technology plant in Mexico. This technology will help solve fundamental problems of too much garbage, offer cost savings for waste service providers throughout growing metropolitan areas, decrease methane emissions from a reduction in landfill cover, reduce carbon emissions through promoting the use of cleaner jet fuel and create significant employment opportunities in Mexico .
